I can't believe it! She must think I'm deaf because I kept asking her how old she was.
I'm still in denial. My niece chose this restaurant to celebrate her 13th birthday because it's close to her home in Manoa. Dainichi is located on the Ground Floor of the Manoa Marketplace, behind Safeway and across from Longs Drug Store. It's the former location of Tokoname.
In fact, the name, 'Tokoname', is still on the store front! This was a wise dining choice because of the FREE parking, efficient, friendly service (we had a large party of 12 people), and spacious, calm environment. It was not crowded on a Sunday evening - yay!
Most of us chose one of the $12 Specials. For example, my sister got the Oyster Katsu Curry. My brother-in-law and I got the Chicken Katsu Curry, Niece #2 got the poke bowl, and my mom got the Spicy Pork. The meals come with rice, a green salad, miso soup, edamame, and two kinds of tsukemono.
The Chicken Katsu was on the plain side and the curry had no onions, carrots, or potato. Too bad they had run out of ramen. Niece #3 had to order udon, which was okay. Aunty Nadine knows because she helped the little girl finish up her noodles - the light colored broth was on the bland side and the udon was on the softer side. They were really good about letting us bring in our own birthday cake.
We were given some small plates, forks, and napkins - not enough for everyone, but we appreciated the effort. (My sister was ready with her own paper goods, candles, and knife.) Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I'd come back for another special occasion and perhaps try the sushi. Not sure if I'd drive all the way to Manoa Valley again if there was no reason. I'm giving only 1 star for the service, the sushi was terrible. As noted in other reviews the service was very friendly although obviously inexperienced. This place just opened and for the month of October they are giving a 25% discount.
So I thought I might as well try it. It was a Monday evening, I came in at around 7:30PM. I was greeted and then seated by someone sitting at the very front table doing paperwork. This isn't a small hole-in-the-wall so go to your office if you have one or use the back table and the divider screen, which I saw you had. Nobody wants to see paperwork sprawled messily over a table as they walk in. The place was also pretty empty, maybe 3 tables were occupied by customers. I should have turned around and walked out at that point.
But I was open-minded and hopeful I might be surprised. I ordered the kin or gold sushi sampler, regular price is $40 but for this month it's $30 with the discount. The menu describes this as, 'same as the gin with more exotic fish!' This sampler included one of each nigiri: shrimp, ikura, tobiko, ika, salmon, hamachi, and 2 pieces of maguro. This also came with a spicy salmon roll. So that's 8 pieces of nigiri and one sushi roll, based on the menu description I believe they gave me the silver sampler. Shouldn't there be more than 8 pieces of nigiri with the gold sampler?
The sushi rice was flavorless and the texture of the fish was a bit off. One major sin they comitted was that the gari was touching the ika, gari should never touch any of the food! And plastic grass on the plate??
Was this a joke? Why are they giving me crappy convenience store sushi? The gold sampler is absolutely not worth the $40 or even the discounted $30. I've had better and cheaper nigiri from supermarkets. I saw this was a new place so i knew i had to try it asap!!! So called and made a reservation and here I am now! Here the reviews: *First of all let me tell you that you will still see Tokonames name outside so dont get confuse (i actually had to call when i was parked outside to confirm i was in the right place) *Ambience: It is exactly like Tokoname, nothing has changed at least as of now.
*Service: 10 points, my waiter was really nice and friendly. *Parking: restaurant is inside Manoa Market place so plenty parking! *Food: decided to try one of their specials ($12) so i chose the Teriyaki beef and got me a Lanikai roll ($15.95) supposedly one of their specialties. Both of their items were good, don't forget to get rice with your Teriyaki beef, ITS FREE!!
Overall, i think the food was good but i felt that i was still eating in Tokoname. Love the $12 menu though and they are giving 25% discount until the end of October thats a big part of why the 4 stars! Dainichi is now in the house! Don't worry though, their food is super similar to Tokoname (same menu + new cover page) and the original Tokoname is now on Waialae Ave near the self storage.
For those of you not familiar with the old Tokoname, they serve sushi, Japanese entrees and drinks. We went on a Friday night an hour before closing. Drivers For Acer Aspire E15 Windows 7.
They weren't very busy so there was no wait, yay! We were surprised at first that it wasn't Tokoname but was assured the menu was similar. Sure enough it was. Dainichi added a $12 menu special that had poke bowl, garlic steak, curry and other items. It comes with rice and miso soup. My boyfriend and I got a tempura combo which comes with two choices, miso soup, salad, rice, tsukemono and a 'chef's appetizer'.
Each tempura combo is about $35. You can choose from miso salmon, rib eye, tonkatsu, tebasaki chicken and the list goes on.
The tempura and tonkatsu were crispy but were 'okay' nothing special. The miso salmon was pretty good. The salmon was grilled and came with the miso sauce on the side which was savory and sweet at the same time.
Finally we got the salmon dynamite. It was basically a California roll with spicy salmon baked on top. If was really good and something to order next time. Next, service from our waitress was on super super on point and attentive. She was really friendly and was sure to visit us each time she passed. Overall, with the ample parking and it being similar to the old Tokoname, I'll be sure to visit again. Wifey and I were on our way to an evening at the theatre (Manoa Valley Theater is just down the street).
We were in The Manoa Marketplace, time was limited, and contemplating our options. We settled on Dainichi because we thought it would be faster than the other restaurants around.
We were incorrect about that. We were greeted and seated immediately but it took over 5 minutes for anyone to acknowledge us. An unnamed employee brought two glasses of water.
Another several minutes passed before one of the waiters came to our table. Wifey had a beer, I had a glass of wine.
We ordered their Dynamite Sushi roll and the French Fry Tempura Vegetables. It took another 20 minutes before we got our food. The vegetable tempura was bland and the sauce tasted like it was store bought. Whatever it was they put on the Sushi looked and tasted like a cross between velveeta and hot sauce. While we were sitting there we watched the other tables. There were three waitstaff working and the restaurant was only about a quarter full.
None of the staff did table checks. One group had to literally catch their waiter as he went by in order to get their check. Talking to our waiter we learned their was a trainee in the kitchen and among the waitstaff. Maybe we caught them on an off night. Maybe their food is usually better and maybe they usually have experienced workers. Whatever the case we won't be inclined to stop In again.
We were looking for Japanese food in the Manoa marketplace and tried Dainichi. We were surprised to learn that they recently opened as Dainichi. Very friendly staff, relaxing & comfortable atmosphere. The food was delicious, generous portions and reasonable pricing.
Our server Reyn (sp?) was very helpful, kind & efficient. Small world, while talking with the owner & staff, they learned we are from Kauai. One of the staff is the current Miss Kauai!!! She was adorable! It's definitely a do again! 10/2/2016 We returned from Kauai & went with Ohana anticipating a delicious meal. We were sad because some of the dishes we ordered were not available.
One of our party ordered chicken Katsu & a coke, it arrived at the table when we almost finished our meal, even with repeated reminders. One of our appetizers never arrived. We were not charged. The food that did come out was delicious. The fried pork chops & butterfish misoyaki were Ono.
We had requested to be served by Reyn. He tried to take care of us. Sorry our initial 5 star review is now 3 stars. My Husband wants to give them another chance. Still looks like Tokoname and has largely the same menu as Tokoname, but front of menu has '$12 Dainichi Specials' so we decided to try those.
We got katsu curry and Teri beef, they came as teishoku (salad, soup, tsukemono included). A few disappointments: - Ordered Sapporo on tap; waitress came back later and informed us they were out, no biggie, we just did Kirin instead - Ordered Snow Maiden sake, waitress came with bottle and poured half the glass until the bottle ran out, she went to find another but came back to inform us they were out of snow maiden. A little annoying since this was the second thing we ordered that they ran out of, but she comp'd what we had received of the sake so far - Decided to order another sake as well, waitress forgot about it? We waited 15 minutes before reminding another staff member, waitress promptly came and delivered - Salad comes: literally just romaine lettuce with some dressing. Yes, romaine, not even good lettuce and absolutely no other veggies in it. The katsu curry and beef Teri were nothing amazing.
We also got a dynamite sushi (baked) like we used to order at tokoname, tasted like they baked it a little too long, rice tasted firm but we weren't sure if it was cuz it was stale or baked too long. Overall, not the greatest experience. All the staff was super friendly at least. Restaurant is still pretty new so maybe they are getting their bearings? Also it is 25% off until the end of October, so bill came out to be not too bad. This place is incredible!
Best salmon by far on the island and great service. Even though it's a fairly large place the staff greets and remembers you like a smaller family owned place would.
Every time I visit the manager and owner stop by to ask me how I've been and talk story for a bit. Everyone is always very friendly and efficient. I love salmon sashimi and try it at most restaurants but no where has come close. The owner recently (about 1-2 months ago) majorly upgraded the salmon so it is fattier and more delicious than ever without increasing the price. This place is high quality and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who love Japanese food and/or sashimi! Trying out a new restaurant in Manoa Marketplace.
My parents and I were interested in trying out this place for lunch. The sign says Donburi Specials. You can see by my 1 star rating it was terrible. We were seated and handed menus with limited lunch options of donburi's ONLY. Ok, that's fine. We ordered and carried on with our conversation. We got our water and soda quickly.
Surprisingly we got miso soup too. It was hot and tasty. BUT once our food came, it was down hill from there. First of all, our lunch donburi's were served to us in to-go plastic containers. Is there a legitimate reason why they don't have regular dishware for service. What we ordered: My mother ordered the pork chop donburi. There was a bone-in grilled (with no flavor) pork chop sitting in a bowl with a small amount of rice.
She could barely cut up the porkchop in the plastic bowl. Let just say that she didn't care for her dish. My father ordered the Teriyaki Beef Donburi.
What could go wrong?? It was the worst!
It looked like chopped up overly sauced bits of beef over rice with a sprinkle of green onion. It looked like the one you get in the frozen food section. He only ate half of it. I ordered the Oyakodon. At first glance, it did NOT look like the typical oyakodonburi. (I knew I should of took a photo) It was bits of chicken that was overly sauced with supposedly scrambled egg.
It tasted like a cheap version of shoyu chicken. But I ate because I was hungry. As we were ending the meal, I looked up this place up in yelp to look at photos and reviews. I saw that the lunch menu came with Miso soup, salad and tsukemono. Where was ours??
It would if made the situation a lot better. Others in the restaurant was served the same plastic bowl meal except for one lady. She had a nice big plate with what looked like a nice salad with seared ahi. We could not believe our eyes. There was something being served that's not in plastic bowl or a Donburi style dish. We politely asked the server what the lady ordered. The server said, it's one of the salads on the menu (along with appetizers).
We would have ordered appetizers and a nice salad to go with our meal if we had been given the regular menu. She said, 'Oh yeah, sorry, I didn't give you this menu' Apparently, the real menu is for dinner service with a whole listing of sushi as well. We were completely irritated and disappointed with the whole experience. The only reason for the 1 star is the tasty Miso Soup that came with the meal.
We are NOT returning to this restaurant. This is what happens when we try something new. So disappointing!! This is the old Tokoname restaurant in Manoa. Still furnished the same way. During lunch one day we came upon a sign that said 20% off for their lunch specials. Grand opening date for the new Dainichi was on November 28.
Everything they offered on the menu was regularly priced at $9 or $12.50, but during their promo period, everything was at $7.50! How can we go wrong with that deal? They had a variety of choices like grilled ahi, garlic ahi, poke bowl, pork chop bowl, chicken katsu curry bowl, spicy pork bowl, etc. All meals also came with hot tea and a small cup of miso soup. I came back twice, first trying their spicy pork bowl with fried rice--super spicy and delicious! Also had their poke bowl. The fish was a nice cut and had a nice shoyu flavor.
My friend had the grilled ahi, which was a thick seared cut served with ponzu sauce. Good deal while it lasts so come check them out! I believe they also open for dinner but their menu is probably different at this time. Dainichi Restaurant & Sushi Bar is an excellent restaurant with very cordial and impeccable customer service. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are so generous that we always take 1/2 of our food home to enjoy for lunch the next day. We really LOVE the crispy deep fried pork chops which is served with rice, a green salad, miso soup, edamame, and two kinds of tsukemono. When I compare Dainichi to Gyotaku, I have to say that Dainichi wins in every way.
We went to Gyotaku for dinner and tried the 'Senior Special' which is served all day and is priced at $10.95. It comes with white or brown rice, tossed green salad and miso soup. I decided to try the Maguro sashimi which was an extra $2.50. So, the total price for my meal was $13.50. I was SHOCKED when they brought five (5) paltry pieces of sashimi. After eating the tiny pieces of sashimi, I told my 'significant other' that I was still FAMISHED and we needed to order more food which we did. I was really quite upset that Gyotaku was so STINGY with their servings.
At Dainichi, we are served so much food for only $12 that only are we satiated but there's enough for a 'doggy bag' for left overs the next day. At Gyotaku, Jasmine (waitress) and Marissa (manager) apologized for the very MEAGER serving.
Marissa said that she would inform the owner. I told her to tell the owner that he should go to Dainichi in Manoa and check out the huge portions of food for only $12. Both Jasmine and Marissa laughed and said that they too LOVE Dainichi and indeed the food is DELICIOUS, GENEROUS and very INEXPENSIVE! The only thing I wish is that Dainichi would serve the healthier brown rice.Otherwise, it's one of my favorite Japanese restaurants. There's lots of parking too as it's located in the Manoa Shopping Center.
It's hard to objectively review my experience here because I stumbled upon the restaurant thinking it was still Tokoname. In fact, it hadn't fully dawned on me that I was dining at Dainichi until the owners very graciously offered us a complimentary dish in celebration of their grand opening.
I had lunch here and, in addition to their regular menu, there was a fairly extensive list of teishokus available as part of the lunch specials. On this occasion, I had the garlic steak which was pretty tasty on its own, but was also complemented by rice, miso soup and a chef's choice appetizer. For the price at this writing ($12), I thought that was fairly good value. Perhaps due to not having a huge patronage that day, our waitress was also extremely eager to check up on us and make sure we were enjoying the meal. I don't think I can think of anything bad to say about this place as a lunch venue.
